Lara Davis Job Title Communications Officer Company Australian Poultry CRC City of Residence Country NSW Year Graduated & Degree: Applied Chemistry Undergraduate Degree 1999 I'm currently employed as the Communications Officer for the Australian Poultry CRC based at the University of New England in country NSW. My tasks cover a range of items, including writing newsletters, bulletins, media releases and web material aimed at both internal and external CRC audiences. The challenge lies in the communicating the research results in language that is suitable for the target audience, making it either technical or plain English depending on the situation. I also have to write documentation such as Presentation and Publication Guidelines and construct the Communications Strategy for the entire organization. In future I may be required to run communications workshops and field days for researchers and industry members in the CRC. I think communications is an area that most science students dismiss. In taking your science knowledge and applying it somewhere else you find that there are so many more diverse opportunities for science graduates. Interestingly, for many, science education or communication can be much more rewarding and allow more freedom than scientific research. Go to the RMIT Applied Chemistry homepage
