ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS
Victorian Institute for Chemical Sciences (VICS) has created VICS Environmental Solutions to contribute to state wide environment protection and natural resource management, which have been identified by the Government as strategic Priority Sectors for Victoria.
Key Objectives
The key objectives are to improve environmental sustainability and the management of natural resources in Victoria through science and technology. This will be achieved by operation of a world class centre for environmental science research, able to translate new science into practical technological solutions and to deliver them to areas of need. In addition to the participating staff from VICS member universities, VICS Environmental Solutions will build networks with top international environmental scientists and interact with the established CRCs for Water Quality and Treatment, Catchment Hydrology and Freshwater Ecology and other institutions concerned with the environment and natural resources.
Collaboration and Services
VICS Environmental Solutions will also engage in collaborative programs with various stakeholders including state and local government, water authorities and manufacturing industry. It will provide scientific research, testing and monitoring services, problem solving, policy advice and environmental consulting.
Initiatives
VICS Environmental Solutions has begun its program with three initiatives. The first is the introduction of an integrated Mobile Field Laboratory (MFL) allowing investigation of environmental problems at their origin, which often are in remote rural areas and include water availability, salinity, nutrient loadings, soil salinity and sodicity. It will be applicable also to investigation of the treatment of agricultural and manufacturing waste waters and biosolids. The MFL will enhance capabilities and assist in the development of practical solutions to these problems.
VICS Environmental Solutions is developing instruments for water quality analysis in conjunction with the VICS-Centre for Scientific Instrumentation. Of particular interest are flow injection analysis, portable field ready instruments and remote monitoring. These VICS groups will also run joint training programs and workshops on water quality measurements, appropriate instrumentation and methods.
A major VICS Environmental Solutions research project is an investigation of the transport and fate of important phosphorus species in aquatic and terrestrial systems, with emphasis on the Gippsland lakes.
